~WORK STATIONS~
On Wednesday, we introduced "Work Stations" as part of our daily routine.  In our classroom there are several different "stations" where children visit and choose activities during Free Choice time.   Those stations include:

*Discovery Station (science and social studies)
*Fine Motor Station
*Games Station
*Construction Zone
*Math Magic (math activities)
*ABC Station (alphabet/letter activities)
*Writing Station
*Creation Station (art activities)
*Book Nook
*Sensory Tub
*Pocket Chart Station (language activities)
*Listening Station
*Dramatic Play Station

Often, children will visit the same station and/or do the same activity during Free Choice time.  In order to encourage them to visit other stations in the classroom, we do Work Stations.  For a short period of time (10-15 minutes),  two children are assigned to a specific station from which they need to choose an activity(ies).  At the end of the 15-minute period of time, "Free Choice" time begins.   Children can choose to continue to engage in the tasks they have been doing during Work Stations or they can clean up and move to a station of their choosing.  Each day, the children are assigned to a new Work Station until they have visited all 8 stations.  Then, the rotation begins again.  During our next rotation of Work Stations, there will be some tasks that are assigned for children to complete when they are assigned to a specific station.  During this first rotation, children are learning the "routine" of Work Stations, including choosing and engaging in activities from an assigned station.

A pocket chart indicates the Work Station to which a child is assigned.

During our first day of Work Stations, children learned who their Work Station partner would be and which station they would visit.

~FREE CHOICE~
Our Pre-K Pizza Place in the Dramatic Play Station has been a popular, busy place!

Carter and Olivia practice their reading skills at the pocket chart in the Book Nook.
Layla counts the stars from the counting basket.
Heath and Jordan reread the story, Me Too!

Ella puts numbers 1 through 50 together in the correct order!

~SCIENCE~
We read the story, Mickey's Magnet to help us learn more about magnets and what makes an object magnetic.  From the story, children learned that not all things made of metal are magnetic--only those that are made of iron and steel.  After the story, children were provided with a magnetic wand and explored the classroom to discover magnetic objects.  There was a great deal of excitement during this exploration!
Paper clips are magnetic.
Rubber bands are not magnetic.

 ~Math~
We read the story Beep Beep, Vroom Vroom!  and learned about patterns.  Following the story, childrenn were assigned a partner and together they worked on creating different patterns.

EXTENDED DAY PRE-K
The children went swimming for the second time today and continue to impress the swimming teachers!  The children are also doing a great job of undressing/dressing tasks before and after swimming.  Practicing dressing skills at home is important and beneficial, especially putting on socks and learning how to "inside-out" your clothes.  Keep encouraging this independence at home!

THRILLING THURSDAY 10-6-16
ASK ME ABOUT...
...what I did with my buddies and what I learned about my buddies.
...where I went and what I did for Work Stations.
...what I did in P.E.
...the story, Happy Birthday To You. You Belong In A Zoo.

~BUDDIES~
The children were very excited to get together with our 3rd grade buddies today.  We headed outside to the blacktop area on the playground since the weather was dry and sunny.  Buddies took turns tracing their bodies with sidewalk chalk and then sharing some of their favorite things.  This activity promoted the buddies getting to know one another better.

~STORY~
Today we read a story about a birthday party.  Next week, we are going to make a class birthday book so we know when everyone's birthday is.

~EDP~
Today was a "Cooking Day" and the activity we did involved food but was more of a discovery activity.
Children were shown the fruit pictured below and asked to identify it.  The children's responses included an onion, an apple, a radish and the correct answer--a pomegranate.  Children took turns holding/feeling the fruit and then watched as the teacher cut it open.  Inside were seeds--hundreds of seeds!  Next, each child was provided a section of the pomegranate and were encouraged to pick out the seeds ( a great fine motor task) and also taste them.  Most children brought home some seeds in a baggie to share with their families.
